Welcome to the Kia Stinger GT, the future of the Kia Brand. If your perception of kia went no further than quality and reliable family cars then prepare to be enlightened.

Fastest, most powerful Kia

The Stinger GT is Kia’s first luxury sport sedan. It has a 3.3 litre Twin turbocharged V6 engine that churns out 365 horsepower. It will go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. That’s just as fast as a V10 Equipped BMW M5, the king of sport sedans not long ago.

In addition to thrilling performance, the Stinger has stunning good looks and a very luxurious interior. All these characteristics make the Stinger a Worthy contender to some very competent German saloons from Mercedes Benz, BMW and Audi.

Part German

So how did kia, a South Korean Automaker, manage to create a sport saloon that rivals the best of Germany? It is partly due to the fact that they recruited some very prominent German professionals who were already working for brands like BMW and the Volkswagen Audi Group of companies.

Two noteworthy Names are Peter Schreyer and Albert Bearmann.

Peter Shreyer

In 2006, Kia Hired Peter Schreyer to be their Cheif Design Officer. Before joining Kia, Mr Schreyer was a prominent designer for the Volkswagen Audi group.

He is the man responsible for the iconic design of the Audi TT first unveiled in 1995. Also, he worked on many popular cars such as Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen golf, Audi A4 and Audi A6 to name a few. Mr. Schreyer is the man behind the Stinger’s stunning good looks.

Albert Bearmann

Kia not only wants their cars to look awesome. They also want them to be thrilling and exciting to drive. In 2014, Kia recruited Mr Albert Bearmann to take care of that aspect of the brand.
Mr Bearmann had previously worked as Vice president of engineering at…..wait for it…..BMW’s M division. He worked on all BMW M cars for the past 20 years prior his appointment at Kia.

He now works as Kia’s Executive Vice President of Motor Vehicle Testing and High Performance Development. Please be aware that Mr Bearmann put a lot into the Stinger.

A true GT car

GT is an acronym for “Grand Tourer”. A Grand Tourer is an automobile capable of delivering comfortable long distance driving at high speeds while maintaining agile performance. I personally have not driven the Stinger as yet. However, I’m sure you’d be hard pressed to find a review online that denies the Stinger of the “GT badge”.

The Stinger comes in either rear wheel or all wheel drive. If you choose rear wheel drive….like I would….then you have the option of equipping your Stinger with a limited slip differential.

Also worth noting is that the car has five driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Eco, Custom and smart. Custom enables you to customize the car’s throtte response, steering sharpness and suspension stiffness to your heart’s content.

A crucial part of being a GT is having reliable stopping power. Can you imagine experiencing brake fade while descending Mount Rosser? Not so in the Stinger GT. It comes equipped with Brembo Brakes as standard. Four pistons at the front, two at the rear.

Exterior design

If you plan on having the Stinger as your personal means of commute in Jamaica then prepare for lots of attention. The stinger has a gorgeous looking fastback design. Of course, this design is reminiscent of the BMW 4 series Gran Coupe and Audi A5 sportback, two of the Stinger’s close rivals. Kia made a brilliant decision by opting for this design instead of the usual sedan form.

The car has a pleasantly aggressive front facia largely due to it’s menacing headlights and excessive vents. The day time running lights add a sleek look and help you spot a Stinger from miles away.

Aggression is also maintained at the rear thanks to the quad tailpipes, rear diffuser and Masserati like tail lamps.

The Stinger has a beautiful interior. Very luxurious and refined. The particular Stinger I reviewed has red leather which looks and feels quite upscale. As you sit in the driver’s seat, you quickly notice that you sit quite low in the Stinger as expected from a sports car. The seats are mega comfortable, with plenty of bolsters to hold you perfectly in those fast corners.

Besides leather, a nice touch of brushed aluminum is present on the doors, center console and dash area.

The steering wheel has a nice race inspired look thanks to it’s flat bottom. Steering wheel controls are present and arrayed in user friendly fashion.

Rear passengers will have ample legroom and headroom. They also get there own climate control via two AC vents along with two 12 volt sockets for charging cellphones etc.

A Four cylinder version is also available

If 365 horsepower sounds like too much then opt for the Stinger GT-Line. This one has a turbocharged 2 litre 4 cylinder engine that makes 260 horsepower. Somehow it still manages to go from 0 to 100km/h in under 6 seconds. It’s no slouch.

Round Up

The Stinger GT is an awesome car from Kia. It delivers sports car performance and luxury for a family of five. I believe we’ll see a number of them on our roads soon.
